Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:

 

·         Serves as Soil Scientist on the State Soil Scientist Staff with responsibility for providing state staff support for Geographic Information System (GIS), Toolkit, Soil Survey Geographic Database, digital map finishing and digital orthophotography.

·         Provides leadership to Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Field Offices (FO), Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD’s), counties and others in use of digital soils data and orthophotography use.

·         Makes recommendations to State Soil Scientist on computer software and hardware needs to adequately fulfill the needs of both field and state office soils staffs. Provides technical assistance to soil surveys.

·         Describes and classifies soils according to standards in the Soil Taxonomy, National Soil Survey Handbook (NSSH), Soil Survey manual (SSM), and Field Book for Describing and Sampling Soils.

·         Collects soil samples according to the Soil Survey Laboratory methods Manual for analysis at the National Soil Survey Laboratory and performs appropriate field tests to aid in the classification, mapping, and interpreting of the soils in the soil survey area.

·         Provides assistance to the Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) Office (MO) in developing and maintaining the NASIS database for the state.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.
